The Arkansas History Commission (AHC) has many resources to assist family historians in locating information about Civil War ancestors. The AHC has the largest collection of Arkansas related Civil War manuscript materials available anywhere, including correspondence, diaries, and memoirs. The AHC's collections also contain printed materials such as newspapers, broadsides, maps, ephemera, and books including the Trice Civil War collection. AHC visual holdings include images of many kinds related to civilians as well as Confederate and Union soldiers. Ambrotypes, tintypes, printed images, and photographic prints on paper such as the popular, widely-traded carte de visites, are among these materials.
County government records also document life during the Civil War. At the federal level, government records include the Southern Claims Commission Records, WPA ex-slave interviews.
